Mobile User Interface Design

UI (User Interface) design "meet & sketch" for the single-player version of AdventureQuest Mobile! Designing things to fit phone + tablet + web screens is a lot trickier than it looks. Not only because the resolutions and aspect ratios are different from device to device... but also because you use your finger (or thumbs) for one and your mouse for the other. We spend a lot of time holding an imaginary game in the air saying things like "you know... if I am using my thumbs to play, I prefer attacking with my right hand thumb."

In the sketches you can see my (SUPER ULTRA AMAZING) scribbles... and how Cysero is able to turn it into something beautiful and functional. Look at the right most doodle then scroll back up and look at the picture of BattleOn-- yup, that is all Cysero had to go on! As an added bonus everything looks amazing on J6's wicked awesome backgrounds. Oh! And in the sketch above... to the left you will see a preview of "WEAPON FUSION". This allows you to combine two weapons.. you choose which parts of each weapon to keep (Art, Stats, Proc).. and them fuse them to get a new weapon. This is how it will be possible to "level up" a weapon and make it more powerful in this game. www.Artix.com

"RAWR" Sometimes I look at this killer artwork and think, "We should just release the game in doodle version!"

P.S. Meanwhile, in another room in the Lab, DRAGONS is rocking along nicely... will post you an update with the newest painted art next week!

QUESTION: What do you think of the "WEAPON FUSION" idea? Is this something you would like to see in other games as well?

The Extraordinary Mr. E: Too be honest, I'm not too fond of the AQ2D mobile U.I. so far. I feel like the XP bar can be incorporated into the player portrait border. And I still think the currency bars don't need to be in the "global U.I.". It would he fine just kept in the Inventory screen.

Necrosis: I think weapon fusion is a big step up in AE games.I Would like to see somthing along those lines in other AE games Such as AQW and OverSoul. Also I believe it would be a good idea to make weapon fusion in a way so that the player can distribute stat/skill points to the weapon. Also I would Love to see special weapon fusion only items which can improve and even add special effects when fused with a weapon such as ores, metals, souls and magic spells. Also if possible maybe you could sell the weapon parts so you don't need a full weapon for fusion.This would also force you to collect other weapon parts to complete certain items thus giving the player something to work towards. I would also LOVE to see this applied to pet items to a certain extent. That way players can not only feed their pets but train them as well. Maybe even add something to the pets that has you feed the pets once they run out of power or what not. Thank you for reading this EXTREMELY FORMAL STATEMENT all the way thou and BATTLE ON!

KJinx101: I like your ideas. Ha, you sound like my friend who plays minecraft: spell enchanting, ores... But I really like the idea of quest items or something used to enhance weqpons. it's like AE's classic syste of merging.. especially in drgonfable: 13 unlucky doom essences for better doom weapon.... BUT DUDE YOU ARE A GENIUS! what if we could do stuff like this to customize element too.

KJinx101: The fusing of weapons is a great Idea. I just rather you put some limits on it. AQW had to much freedom. You could make anyweapon look however you'd like with the desired stats

KJinx101: I want it to be where we have a nice challenge. Maybe a hard quest where the boss's strength is based on you stats or an insanely huge amount of money. If not, it's still okay. I like te idea of fusing period. Now, time for some AQ3D news.... wait... I'd also like so say that the AQW shoulders are just so particular for AQ3D. It'd be better if you could start with some small pitiful ones and earn them through your first battle such as the gorrillaphant in DF or the Zard in AQ classic. Is it okay if I repost this section in the comments of the next AQ3D post?

Ark_Zong: Actually they do have a base damage so some weapons could be stronger even with the same enchantments, I think so didn't actually test it

DerpSonic: I really like the Weapon Fusion idea! I personally, think that the weapon upgrade systems from the other games should stay the same (or at least be similar). The interface and art look EPIC (including the doodles)! I'm really looking forward to seeing the combat game play as well, I like the look of the doodle for it!

Spitlicker: I thought that the treasured currency in AQ2D mobile would be z-tokens, so therefore sometime in the future, if possible, a system could be added to the game, where z-tokens from Adventurequest classic to AQ2D mobile. Other than that, I can't wait to start playing this game and Adventurequest Dragons.

Kenamo: I think the weapon fusion idea is awesome, maybe have some fusion specific weapons where you can exchange hilts, blades, runes, maybe special attacks. Either way great idea. Good luck on the UI!

The Extraordinary Mr. E: I would personally prefer a fleshed out weapon-crafting system vs. the proposed weapon fusing. More control over what you want and more potential for creative combinations.

defender_of_light: i really like the weapon fusion idea, but only as long as i can decide wich stats the weapon should improve (like in aqw), i dont want to use specific tipes of weapons for caster classes and another kind for melee classes (for ex. : swords for warriors and staffs for mages). Oh and, is there going to be some weapons from previous ae games? like the blade of awe or the eternity blade, so that we can fuse them together and see how they turn out.

I UnderLord I: Goodness; this information pleases me to the extent that I'm tearing up (metaphorically if not literally). A phenomenal venture thus far! The Weapon Fusion concept is assuredly great, though as others have mentioned, hopefully there are limits on quantity as well as other restrictions to ensure that AQ's exquisite balance remains and that the enjoyment of the game is not detracted from.

Corrupt_End: I love the weapon fusion idea but what would make it really fun is if the two names of the weapons fused. If the firs half and second half of certain names switched you could end up with really funny and silly names. Like lets say Big Blade and Pearl Saber get fused and you end up with Pig Blade or other silly things like that.

Cysero: Not entirely but possibly to some degree. AQ Classic has more than 10 years of weekly releases and there's no way that we could fit all of that content in a mobile game much less release it in a timely fashion. But we might be able to import your character to some small degree. Maybe your name and character appearance and possibly some other benefits for long-time supporters of AQ Classic. As of right now, there are no plans to connect to two games at all in any way.

Rollly: The UI looks nice, but I would suggest combining the Character portrait with both the XP and Health & Mana Bars. As an example I would give AQ Classic, which I personally think worked and looked very good. The only downside to that Idea that I can think of would be that it might be a bit too big... I mean it might hide to much of the screen; probably being the biggest problem on a smartphone. But enough about UI... WEAPON FUSIONS!!! Idea sounds cool and workable to me! There is something in my head that says it wouldn't work for AQW, but I don't quite know what that is. On the other hand I feel it would work perfect for DF and AQ Classic. Also, in regards to the doodle version, you could always have a button in the game that transforms everything into doodle art :P

ZeroDaGrimz: the weapon fusion idea is epic!! how about class fusion too? and enchantment can give debuff to enemy? like if you enchant a weapon with darkness enchantment you will get Shadow Curse, if you enchant something holy/light, you will get Blinding Light.. this is just an idea :P

Hellwing: i think the weapon fusion idea would be great especially for adventure quest, though i think as far as that goes in my opinion it would only work for certain weapons like the various guardian weapons (sword, staff, spear ect.), an possibly some of the quest wepeons
