Design Notes

Moving forward!

Thank you for being so understanding and supportive in yesterday's Design Notes post. I am a little embarrased to admit just how much fuzzy warmth I felt in my heart after reading your comments on the post, on Facebook, via email, and also several heart felt private messages -- including some surprising ones from staff members. "Never give up!" and "Go for it!" and "Battle on!" were the tenants echoed through the messages. The internet can be such a brutal and cruel place-- but you were there for me during this rough time. I will always do my very best to be here for you too. My email is Artix (at) AQ.com -- keep that somewhere safe for emergencies. Please do remember, the best way to send me a message is to post it as a comment below-- because then multiple staff and myself will see it.

NEW VIDEO GAME PROJECTS

"So you want to make a game?" I have two green lit game projects that I am excited to announce. One is a project of passion, the other is a long overdue game that is part of a bigger plan to move us toward our ultimate goal.

  • Secret Game Project #1 - to be announced this week (will need your help)
  • Secret Game Project #2 - to be announced next week (will need LOTS of your help!!!!!)
  • Technology Experiments - will be talking about this randomly (want to help test?)
If you're serious about helping us test, then you should read Cysero's post about how to become a tester, moderator or developer for AE!

ADVENTUREQUEST WORLDS

While the teams are working on projects for their specific games, I have been directly involved in the following things for AQWorlds.  You will quickly notice that my list is focused on the less glamorous, "under the hood" base improvements. things like reverse enginering the amazing questing system that we had built for AQ3D and retrofitting it into AQWorlds for the upcoming new storyline. Once these changes are finished I would like to work on PvP/Stats improvement-- which will require a server rewrite. Contrary to speculation, those new character models and NPCs I have been getting your opinion on in Facebook are not for AdventureQuest Worlds. Although, depending on how we all feel about it-- it might be very closely related.

  • Writing Drakath finale with Geopetal which includes the final battle then opening up AQW's "real storyline."
If you think the last few parts of this saga's finale were amazing and surprising-- you are REALLY going to enjoy the things that happen next. We really need help from our video-making friends in doing some recaps of what happened in the storyline for people who are not up to date.
  • Optional Facebook login (improved account security) - In Development
  • Improved Quest Interface system - Designed, but Dev starts after Facebook
  • Improved World map with storie-mode, cutscene buttons, and shops built in - In Development
  • The Art and Lore of AQWorlds Book - In Development

JAPAN... Anime, Manga, Robots, Sasuke & Video Games

If you follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook, then you know I recently returned from the otaku/geek capital of the world, Akiba. (Akihabara the "Electric town", located in Tokyo, Japan.) I brought you back lots of weird stories... and would really love to share them. No-one in the lab knows why I was there, or what I was doing. But needless to say my creative batteries are fully recharged. Half way through my trip, our friend Aersion showed up in Tokyo and we went to Sasuke park to do the obstacle course.(The TV show American Ninja Warrior is based off the Japanese TV show "Sasuke".)

O_O Did I just write a post loosely summarizing the potential topics of future posts? Here we go! Tune in tomorrow for an obessive posts about games that you do not need to play to win! Thank you again... and BATTLE ON!

P.S. Anyone else excited about Doctor Who starting back up with the new Doctor!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Sorry Comments are now closed for this post.

Kylestien: First of all, A few things I'm worried about Artix. If you can PM me by the Forums answering these, or post the answer here, I'd appreciate it. First thing's first: IS AE going solely Mobile from now on? Because I can't afford a fancy mobile on my budget and I want to play more of your games. Second, did you see my part about the forgotten games of AE? I did not mean to cause any offesne if I did, I just don't want to see OS and the like die off like AQ3d did. Also Secret Game Project #1 - to be announced this week (will need your help)
Secret Game Project #2 - to be announced next week (will need LOTS of your help!!!!!)
Technology Experiments - will be talking about this randomly (want to help test?) Yes, I would love to help test, though I'm not sure how much help I'd be, and I'm not that great at keeping secrets either. Anyway, I hope you keep on posting DN's, I look forwards to your game announcements, and I hope things go well for the company. Finally, can you give us a few hints on the three projects? I saw Dragons and was ecretly hoping or a 2D Spyro style thing where you play AS a dragon.

Artix
Artix: The goal of Project Omni is to be playable on all devices from web to mobile to toasters. I tend to say mobile on new game projects because more people are familiar with what that means- but everything we are going to make is planned to be playable everwhere (like BattleGems is.) Thank you again for all of your ongoing support. You are a person who always speaks from his heart-- and I know when you are behind something, we are doing the right thing. Dragons is not a 2D spyro type game... but maybe we should toss around some ideas and experiment on an engine for a game like that?
YamiKakyuu
YamiKakyuu: I confess, I LOVED Matt Smith as 11, he's my Doctor but I am geeked to see Capadli tackle 12 since he's going to be so different then the previous doctors. I cant wait for Doctor Who to return.

Gallagus: "Real storyline"? Oh man I thought "13 Lords of Chaos" was the real storyline, if this is only the beginning, I can't wait to see what the future holds! Also one question, how do you feel closing up a storyline that you have been working on for close to 5-6 years now?

Artix
Artix: It feels pretty awesome-- we are finally getting to show Gravelyn's full character arc. She is a pretty interesting character-- daughter of the ultimate villain, forced to take his throne. However, she learns that she is literally the exact opposite (no spoilers) of the person who should be sitting on the throne of the Shadowsythe. With the single goal of avenging her father's death she defiantly continues playing the role... but what will happen when she finally gets the chance to plunge her shadow cursed blade through Drakath's heart? Will she still do it if it costs her everything? Will she still do it if it costs her... you?
DerpSonic
DerpSonic: In reply to your post Artix... WAT?

I was just worried that games would need facebook or mobiles from now on. Fun fact: I got a computer in the first place because of DF. And I really do eworry about the games like OS and HS and the like. I know they wrre not sucesssful finacialy, but I don't want to see them die off like AQ3D did.. Maybe a retool of them would be in order, like take them down for a bit to add new features and stuff then relauch it as it were? I don't know if that's feasable. Also, think about the 2D Spyro thing. A game where you play a a dragon, constantly evolving. Evolve your element. Explore Draconic Society. Get bigger as you level and add points to stuff like power or magic or flight, changing your shape as you put more into them, like a Deathwing style dragon for psychical and a chinese dragon for magical or the like.

Mako: Improved Quest Interface system - Designed, but Dev starts after Facebook;
Improved World map with story-mode, cutscene buttons, and shops built in - In Development... SO EXCITED FOR THESE THINGS! I've always had mixed feelings about the quest system so this will be a major improvement. For an example when you are turning in reputation and the turn-in button isn't working. Drives me insane, especially if I've been grinding for hours.

RedMasta: I've been supporting AQ since 07 from the original, and you and the rest of the team have been simply incredible. Honestly, it's a little sad to think that this storyline is finally going to be wrapped up, but I am ridiculously excited to see a brand new arc to sink my teeth, time and support into (that's a term now). Either way, despite everything and all the hardships and such, you've all done an excellent job. Well done indeed, Artix. Well done indeed!

Whs123
Whs123: As someone who will be going to college for Video game design/programming here in less than 2 weeks from posting this the under the hood stuff i find to be just as interesting if not more, than the actual story and art aspect. Personally it has always been a dream of mine to help test and improve the games because they have been something i can always turn to so that i may be able to relax and enjoy a good story ( I have been inactive on AQW in the last few months due to busy time in life, but finally got back to it and My did i miss some stuff . . . ) I love that the games these days feel to be aiming at a deeper story and a more heartfelt story. Seeing these games grow has been amazing over the last 5-6 years and i am not planning on leaving any time soon. Keep at the great work Artix and the ENTIRE AE team. :)

RavenRose
RavenRose: Thanks for the tip! I just watching all the cutscenes and played last week's release. Part of my problem was my inability to get through Mount Doomskull (and apparently "choose a choas form" at the top) But I think I'm good anyway. Thanks, Artix.

Lightsilocon : I loved the post artix, I hope to see a lot more from you and its great that you guys are moving forward, but my favorite moment from AQW will always be the 30k player login to battle the misfit Chaos Lord Discordia, always an experience to remember. And he had one HP bar and all the servers had to battle him together? It's sad he didn't become an actual chaos lord, but one of the best battles in AQW ever none the less! :D

Fife M: I remember that! Probably my favorite moment too. Ah, good times, good times. ;)
Fife M
Fife M: Oh... my... gummy bears... The 13 Lords of Chaos thing was just the BEGINNING?! Holy cannoli. Well at least now we know there's a remedy for the whole mess that happened in the past summer's worth of finales... Does this mean there will be a greater purpose to the whole champion/Doomwood arc other than just making our brains flop around in our heads like magicarp? 'Cause that would be totally wicked. Can't wait for Friday's release!! (Even though last Friday made me have a flashback to AQW Zombies... hopefully that won't happen again... *shudders*) Big AQW puzzler: How is it that EVERYONE (except the hero) seemed to know what the hero was... but yet didn't classify it as important enough to mention?! I just find it very amusing. Keep it up and can't WAIT for what's coming! (Side note- how does it feel to have not just ONE finale for AQW, but the finale of the TomixSaga happening next week (if all goes properly)?

The Architect
The Architect: "Laaaaadies and Gentlemen...you just imagined an announcer's voice." I'm proud to say I've been playing AE games since the original AQ was still using the old school artwork. I've played other games over the years but, and if they exist let me know, I have yet to meet a group of designers like those of AE that really make you feel part of the community and care what the players have to say no matter how ridiculous. "Why so serious?!" Enough of that BATTLE ON!!! (brought this over from your last design notes)

Colossus
Colossus: So I've always been worried about AE's finances and it's good to see that AE is taking advantage of Battle Gems' success to make more mobile games. While the amount of profit is questionable(I've done a school project simulating entering the mobile app industry) for all but the biggest players, cutting-edge is not so important on mobile as on PC/Mac/Console. With your Flash-based, browser-based pedigree, I'm confident you guys can pull some pretty profits on mobile. Best of luck and battle on!

Colossus
Colossus: Also, I'm curious about why AE doesn't want to move toward client-based games. They just have so much more possibility in terms of technology. Downloading a client isn't complicated or costly for a player like myself and production value could just go much higher with a client-based game.
