Amazing week of Video Game Development

This is one of those stories that very much defines Artix Entertainment as a video game studio. Just last week, Unity3D announced that is was dropping it's exporter for Flash. This is a terrible blow to the AdventureQuest 3D team... and, for that matter, to the Adobe Flash Platform itself. As you know our ultimate goal was to create a 3D MMO that was playable in Flash. We have been working on the 3D game project using our best coders and artists non-stop for over a year. We have overcome so many 'show stopping obstacles' that it is unbelievable that, on the eve of the game's main content production starting, we were kicked in the unmentionables with this news.

Furthermore, we see that more and more of you are moving from the web to to playing games on your phones and tablets. We could have just thrown up our arms, given up, and given into the endless abyss of hopelessness.... *smirks* NEVER! We took a drastic new course of action. As of this week, nearly our entire team of programmers and artists are learning how to make "Omni-Games." That is, games that run on ALL devices. The web, Facebook, iPhones, Androids, tablets, dumptrucks, toasters, bricks, burritos and more. Our first project was carefully selected to be feature-complete in 3 months to teach our programmers and artists this new technology. It will give us the foundation to move our older games to all devices, which has already begun. It has not just begun, it is moving faster than anything we have seen in a LOOONG TIME! Lean in close and hear the unfolding story of Project: Omni (working title).

Bringing a Chainsaw to a Spork Fight

What would happen if Artix Entertainment put 6 of its top programmers and 7 of its top artists on a single, bite-sized, video game project? That is exactly what happened this week. It is the first time in the history of our indie game studio that we have ever had this many people working on the same project. The results are beyond amazing. To design the art for the game we put Thyton, Dage, Samba, Diozz, Yergen, Jemini, and Cysero in a room filled with pencils and paper. For our previous games like DragonFable and MechQuest it took literally 2 months to finalize the character and art concepts. For this game, we did it in 48 hours!  The programmers had simliar success tackling gameplay, customization, database design, and more. The combined forces of Minimal, Zhoom, Rolith, Warlic, Kraken, and Swolicus on a project of this scope is like bringing a laser chainsaw to a spork fight.  The game is an addictive puzzle game with RPG mechanics. We are planning 256 stages and hordes of crazy, over-the-top monsters and weapons.

What is an "Omni-Game"

Omni pretty much means "all." So an Omni-Game must be a game that runs on ALL devices. The real name for this game has not been chosen yet (if you have good ideas please post them as a comment here or on Twitter)! So for now, we are calling this Project: Omni. We are building this game for web, FaceBook, iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android, Tablets and other devices. You will be able to play on one device, and effortlessly switch to another. For example: play on your phone on the bus, then switch to your laptop when you get home. Or maybe even play on your XBox or Wii.

Twilly-and-Zorbak.jpg
Samba & Jemini's version of Twilly and Zorbak pets for this project.

The Facts

  • We plan on building a major mobile game within the next 3 months. It is our first "Omni-Game."
  • This is the first time we have ever had 6 programmers and 7 artists on the creation of a single game project.
  • AdventureQuest 3D is still in production and the Alpha Tests will continue. However it will be short on programmers for the next month. (Xero, Llussion, and Tamarran are currently building out the new zones.)
  • All side-projects including DoomCauldron have been halted.
  • The specific technology on which we are learning to create this project can probably be used to re-create AdventureQuest Worlds as an Omni-Game which will run on all devices (The same goes for EpicDuel, DragonFable, MechQuest, the original AdventureQuest and any of our other games.)
  • Project: Omni started on Wednesday... it is the best move for the future of our games. Since the project started and everyone started learning the new tech, morale has been soaring!

Comment Qustion: This is a pretty risky and dangerous move for AE, but anyone can see how vital this move it is to get onto mobile. What do you think? Are Omni-Games the future?

Sorry Comments are now closed for this post.

The Extraordinary Mr. E
The Extraordinary Mr. E: Depending on how this new game is designed both feature, functionality, and payment model-wise (I'm assuming it'll probably be F2P with some sort of micro-transaction model), it could blow up (in a good way) on the Google Store and iTunes. Free-to-Play games are among the most successful financially on Android.
The Extraordinary Mr. E
The Extraordinary Mr. E: As for suggestions for the actual game, I think the concept art aesthetic is probably the best approach. It is friendly for all platforms, and looks to give a pretty good chance for some great customization both aesthetically and functionally. As for the name of the game, I think "AdventureQuest: Omni Realms" would be a great "umbrella" name so that AE has the potential to fit it's AQ, DF, MQ, AQW IPs all under one game. Major expansions could be added to the game periodically that add these game's worlds to the game completely to be played in the engine and platform.
TemporalMaster
TemporalMaster: I think the word "Quest" is already overated arround here, so I'm going for Omnia Tales.

Asterisk
Asterisk: In a time where most of the kids I see are on their smartphones playing games instead of a platform, I think bringing a game into ALL fronts is a good idea. I see where the doubts come from, but since when has any doubt held AE back? Don't answer that! BECAUSE IT IS RHETORICAL, AND ALSO NEVER!

Snakemasters666
Snakemasters666: Just so long as the other games get solid updates consistently and you don't stretch your workers too thin I dont see any problem with another game. Business wise this is probably a great decision. Mobile games (The term I use to describe games on hand-held devices like phones) are very accessible and can be played anywhere. This market has been steadily growing too, at an almost alarming rate. So moving to those platforms is not a bad business move. I do caution against having less staff and so many games up and running that need weekly updates, but if the team thinks they can handle it then there shouldn't be any problem.

Whs123
Whs123: I for one am glad to see that AE is branching out and taking any obsticle head on and just shrug it off. Truly inspirational to ANYONE in the gaming industry and by far the happiest i have ever been seeing AE take a risk of this caliber (and we all know AE has taken plenty of risks over the years most if not all have panned out). As for a name for the game I rather like the name it has right now "Project: Omni". But what ever risks your company takes in the future always remember you have a lifelong fan in me and deffinately plenty of others as well. Can't wait to see the end result. Risk-Take On AE!

Tiamaat
Tiamaat: Well, it does make sense to make a move to mobile devices, they're pretty much the present/future of technology. But wow, what an endeavor to move all the games to a different kind of frame work than flash! And as always you charge forward! As for the name of the game, I think Omni is a must in the name. Maybe Omni Potential? Since the potential of AE is absolutely epic!

Tonemaro: I'm not a burrito guy, but if I can play Project:OMNI on my burrito while eating it... I may just have to change. I like the name Project:OMNI a lot already, so I don't see any reason for you guys to change it. Perhaps there will be another vote like with AQ3D. AE has always been at the forefront of gaming. F2P, non-download web-browser games and such put you guys leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. It is quite probable that Omni-games are the future, and the fact that you guys are working on them right now means that other companies might catch on in a couple of years and make them big.

Ultimumlord
Ultimumlord: It seems so artix. Just recently one my professor showed a trend that showed more than 50% are moving to mobile while web is around 30%. The purpose of the omni project, raises many questions and problems for us programmers. Can you please share what product AE is using as their primary compiler or coding device to code for all?

Ultimumlord
Ultimumlord: What do I think of all this happening? From a programmer point of view I say this will be really painful, but this is necessary because when we make games or anything the functions should work on all devices due to technological advancement. People are using multiple devices all the time, some might only use few and not others, so in order to make games accessible to all, this change is definitely necessary. However, I really wish for all the devices to use some universal coding language instead of multiple different languages to make it somewhat less painful for the programmers.
Khyst
Khyst: I am in favour of this move. It may be 'risky and dangerous' but it would be an even bigger risk to ignore the direction that tech and the web are taking and get left behind. Other companies have taken the view that people won't abandon old ways and have suffered their lack of vision. I think it is essential of AE to embrace change and move forward. You don't want to become obsolete. I applaud this effort to stay ahead of the tide.

freddy902: dragon fable would do well as an omni game. I can see it selling for 10 dollars on the app store and android market easily. because ther defiantly 19:99 worth of content or more in dragon fable alone right now and more coming with the rest of chapter 3 and than chapter 4.

Alroc: personally AE I think you should get all the developers you used to jump start this game and call them "Team Omni". Then every time your designing a new game you let team omni loose on it for the beginning period to jump start productivity. Now that I think of it "Team Omni" doesn't really make sense but I'm sure you can understand what I'm trying to say :)

Menirz
Menirz: Honestly, I think this is genius. The FB game part is kinda pointless, since from my experience most people dont play them, but the concept is spot on. Im surprised that this hasnt been a quicker trend for the game industry, even simply cross console gaming (yeah, yeah, i know the whole controller superiority and blah blah but still). AE, you are on the cutting edge of the industry. Congratulations! Cant wait to see the fruit of your newest endeavor. Also, in regards to Unity dropping flash, if its simply the flash exporter being dropped why dont you continue developing it as it was before but publish it with Unity? It seems to be a common plug-in nowadays, so i dont think you'll have many issues with people not playing because they are scared of getting it.

Alanisette: I see that they say that these "omni-games" will be able to run on all devices. When I hear that phrase, sometimes they don't happen to include the Windows Phone market. Colossus
Colossus: It's a cool idea and I think that AE can make a wonderful Omni-Game. However, I believe that mobile gaming is not the future of gaming and shouldn't be. Truly epic gaming still is the domain of consoles and PCs and ought to be that way. Serious gaming is not something people do on the bus. The interfacing of mobile gaming is far from the accurate tactile feedback from a PC or console. Already, the Razer Edge is attempting to bring high-standard gaming to mobile devices but I think that it still cannot compare to a PC or console and the best of gaming will always remain on these platforms. However, I support the increase of the standard of mobile gaming as more games with more advanced mechanics are being introduced. What I do support greatly about the idea of the Omni-game is that mobile gaming standards are currently quite low and the competition AE will experience is a lot thinner and it will be a lot easier for AE to shine. I am sure it will be a thrilling game. Best of luck to you guys and we look forward to more Omni-game news! (I can't paragraph) However, I am kind of concerned with the staffing of AE. Obviously, I'm a player and this really is none of my business but AE is taking up so many new projects and you guys constantly report working long hours deep into the night to rush out a release in time. With the introduction of more projects, it will place even more strain. I hope that the AE staffing is adequate so that everyone, players and staff will be happy. I don't pretend to know a lot about what goes on while you guys develop these beloved games but I get the impression that you guys are overworked and understaffed. So, the options are to reduce the work or increase the staff or both. Either way, I hope that AE can continue to up its game and battle on! :D

Tomcat435
Tomcat435: Thinking about it; Most Android, iPad, iPod, etc., games are played only when people are bored and don't have much to do, hell that's what my mother does with Candy Crush Saga on Facebook when nothing's going on at work. Personally, I think PC/Console will always rule over the Android/Phone market, but that's just a personal opinion. Oh and a name? Errr... AdventureQuest Mini or one of the names below, they all sound like awesome names.

Ninjaty: Seriously AE, FIX THE ENTER SUBMIT!!! Hitting Enter to submit a message, without giving us a way to create a new line, is incredibly annoying. Even more so that you don't empty the message variable on reload, as I just accidentally posted the same incomplete message 4 times. It's really not that hard... But for now, I guess I'll just use a lot of spaces to generate the feeling of a new line: Why call it an "Omni-game"? That makes it sound like this game is a mix of all genres, or is a mix of all other gameplay elements that existed before it. Wouldn't "Omni-console game" make a lot more sense? I don't really know how to feel about going back and doing this to all the prior games however. Most consoles have their own limits which each game must be altered to comply with, so with all the potentially necessary changes to graphical files and code, I don't think it'll be worth it.

JeffTechnoWiz: Omni: Mult Type of bug reports, Mult Types of Coding/programming, Mult types of updates you have to worry about on each device, Mult Types of hardware requitemnts on each device, You see where I am going. I think this project will slowly drive AE insane and possible be the REAL death of it. The thing is AE. Stop acting like a Big Boy company. When you clearly aren't. Plus your still so understaffed. Which you can see in MQ, HS. and heck you can tell your understaffed in AQW. If anyone wants me to clear up what I mean. I be happy to. It just artix. Your a indie game company. You must be aware of yourself.

Jowser
Jowser: This game sort of gives me a very chibi/mini feel to it so how about like Minis of Lore. And for the comment question I do believe Omni games could revolutionize the gaming industry, I mean i am so excited for this alone.

Jackal
Jackal: It's the versatility that would make Omni-Games successful. Why lug around a laptop when you have carry an I-Phone to play an MMORPG? It's an obvious choice. I'm just curious if AQ3D would ever become omni-available. It might be difficult to have a hack n' slash (I hope?) be touch-screen usable, but if it was made possible, then it'd be glorious.

Xan23: Tbh, I'm slightly disapointed about aq3d being on hold. But I'm excited for this one. This is a risky thing but I think it's a good thing for AE to move on the same pace with society's technology. I'm sure everyone has high expectations for this especially if this is going on the mobile application market; if it's the AE Team I have no doubts in most areas but I'm very intruiged on how the outcome of the day the game finally publishes, will it crush the android/apple market or will it be just another one of those games? I can't wait for this to come out :)

Oromie
Oromie: I can't really understand what's worng with unity. So the game won't run on android or other portable platforms, but 3d games with touch-screen input aren't that great to begin with.
